The high cost of HP inkjet cartridges and rough economic times, many people are considering buying refilled cartridges. There are pros and cons of doing this. Here are some important things to consider.

The business model seems to be for the printer manufactures is to offer relatively low cost printers, but make a killing on the repeat orders for the inkjet cartridges. For many years now, there has been a process of refilling these cartridges for a fraction of the cost of buying new ones.

This process involves drilling a hole in the cartridge, filling it with ink, then resealing it. A simple process that cuts the replacement cost in half. There are even kits that enable you to do it yourself for even greater savings.

Since the process is simple, just about anyone can set up this type of business, and therein lies one of the problems – quality. Some of the quality issues that can occur:

Full?

A new HP inkjet cartridges will be full. Manufacturing quality control will ensure that. You don’t know if that will be true for a refilled cartridge and you don’t know the quality of the ink used.
Leaking

I’ve never had a new HP inkjet cartridge leak. Again, the manufacturing quality control would make it unlikely. No such same guarantee for a refilled one.

Connections

The electronic connections that enable the printer to communicate with the cartridge may become scratched or damaged during the refill process. This renders the cartridge useless.

Ink Jets

With a new cartridge, you are essentially getting a new printer. Not so with a refill, and if it has been refilled multiple times, the problem increases.

Even with all the above risks, it may still be worth it, if you can find a good supplier. Try one HP inkjet cartridge from one supplier, and if the quality is good, continue buying from that source. If not, try someone else.
